It looks like Mommy Nature is not going to cooperate this Sunday for the 14th Annual Royal Palm Classic century ride. Forecasters are predicting morning thunderstorms accompanied by 19 MPH winds from the NW, gusting to 25 MPH, plus cold temperatures. Far from the ideal riding conditions. In fact they are bordering on dangerous, especially with our unpredictable lightning and spooked drivers.
No matter how much I enjoy cycling, particularly large event rides, there are certain times that it’s best to sit one out, and this one is looking to be a rainout. I don’t mind getting caught in a shower. In fact that is very common down here in Florida, but to go out knowing you’re going to be slogging 100 miles through pouring rain, lightning, high gusty winds and cold temperatures does not rank up there in my “must do list”.
I’ll be keeping my eye on the forecast. Hopefully the storms will either arrive late or avoid us altogether. I guess only time will tell.
On a completely different note, I want to congratulate my friend Adam, AKA Young Pup, on his upcoming wedding…curiously on the same day as the century ride and forecasted storms. They say it’s good luck when it rains on your wedding day, so I guess a rainout isn’t all that bad. Best of luck in this new chapter of your life my friend…welcome to the club…just make sure she lets you cycle as often as you want!
