Lacing Up, Day Four: Bring on Week Two

Week one of my (I should say our as my wife is my cohort) walk run on the wild side is officially in the can, and frankly, it really hasn’t been that bad. Now granted I’m making a very gradual transition into running, not so much due to the physicality of it, but more to appease the mental block I have towards it. In fact the transition has been so gradual that our little mini doxie had no trouble keeping up with us on today’s workout…I guess it’s not much of a workout if a dog with less than 4 inch long legs can keep up without even panting, but hey, it’s still technically a run!

My wife had no quit in her today, although we were both feeling the effects of all the home cooked meals we had over the four day break. Between the Arroz con Pollo, Frijoles Negros, Croquetas and Palomillas, I easily snuck on two pounds…even with that endless “sonny-do” list. Luckily we are back to our normal controlled diets now, which curiously is a lot of the same foods sans Grandma’s insistance that we eat more…Cuban, Italian and Jewish mothers always have a way of guilting you into eating much more than you are accustomed to. 🙂

We actually had fun on the run today as we joked around while watching our puppy running circles around us. Heck we even shot our own version of a “Harlem Shake” video during the workout, so I guess my friends were right when they pointed out that we’d get sucked into it and eventually enjoy it. Well, perhaps not enjoy, but it is definitely sucking less each time we run.

Thursday’s run will bring a slight change in the repertoire with slightly longer running intervals, shifting to seven intervals of 1:30 runs and 1:30 walks, so we’ll definitely be leaving our puppy behind. We both continue to research shoes and other gear. I guess we should just schedule a visit to one of the local running stores and get some expert input and fittings…anything to ease the thump, thump, thumping.
