A Washington State Representative has claimed that cycling is harmful to the environment because the cyclists is emitting greenhouse gasses. Let me repeat that, just in case the ridiculousness of the statement didn’t sink in…bicyclists are polluting the environment by riding their bikes. WTF????
This incredible piece of “logical thinking” comes from Washington State House Representative Ed Orcutt, who recently responded to an email from a constituent who questioned his wisdom…and I use this term very, very loosely here… behind a new “bike tax”. The email, sent by Dale Carlson, the owner of BikeTech in Tacoma and Olympia Washinton, mentioned that a bike tax would harm transportation, decrease bike sales and even worsen congestion. Carlson said he wrote the letter to multiple state legislators, and didn’t expect to get a response, but to his surprise he did, and it’s mind boggling!
Representative Orcutt wrote “If I am not mistaken, a cyclists [sic] has an increased heart rate and respiration. That means that the act of riding a bike results in greater emissions of carbon dioxide from the rider. Since CO2 is deemed to be a greenhouse gas and a pollutant, bicyclists are actually polluting when they ride.” He also argued that motorists help pay for roads and road maintenance, while bicyclists do not, and that they should start paying their fair share.
Cycling, the greenest and most efficient means of transportation known to man pollutes the environment??? What the hell is this man smoking? If increased respiration is the cause of greenhouse gasses shall we tax joggers too, or what about kids playing at the park, or profesional athletes while running for the goal line, or stealing a base. How about that late night hanky panky we do with our significant other, or the after effects of having some chili con carne, that’s got to generate a ton of greenhouse gasses! Are we going to tax that too? It would not surprise me at all if this bonehead came up with an alternative fart tax!
I’m sure the Representative is a nice guy, but the level of shear stupidity in this statement is off the chart. This man is an elected official selected by the populace to represent them, and this is the best he can do? Now I’m sure he is going to claim that he was misquoted or misunderstood, but the email was penned by him as a direct response to his constituents, and its authenticity has been verified too, so yep, there is no question about it, the guy’s a bonafide, card carrying dimwit. But don’t take my word for it, after all, I’m one of those polluting cyclists, read the email yourself. I’m sure you’ll find it just as absurd outrageous laughable farcical harebrained nonsensical preposterous idiotic as I did.
