Lacing Up, Day Thirty-Four: Ode to My Stinky Hat

I never knew what we’d become
When you were young and new
But we’ve become the best of friends
Our relationship it grew

To keep the sun off was your job
At first or so I thought
But you became much more than that
The best I’ve ever bought

And as I look through photos
Ten years passed and gone
Most of my good memories
Were had while you were on

I’ve tried some other hats
All shiny and brand new
But regardless how they look or fit
I kept on coming back to you

You’ve lost your shape, you smell of sweat
You’re even a little torn
And even I must admit
You’re looking a little worn

It’s true you’ve faded, and are worse for wear
Your buckle even rusting
And my wife keeps saying “lose that thing
It stinks and it’s disgusting”

I toss you in the wash
Gentle cycle and detergent
But no mater what the setting
You come out just as pungent

I wish you could have more years
To sit upon my noggin’
Providing shade and soaking sweat
As we keep on joggin’

You were the greatest hat I’ve owned
Best ever made of cotton
And now that it’s time to retire you
You’ll be gone, but not forgotten
