Expect the Unexpected

Cycling is an amazing activity/sport/lifestyle, where you can while away the hours spinning in the saddle with the biggest smile on your face, all the while getting fit while doing so. The friendships and camaraderie are unmatched…ok running is a close second, but I still insist that runners do not smile as much as cyclists, and regardless of the burn in your legs or even the untimely flat, you can always count on cycling to be a fantastic adventure filled with great memories. There are though, those extra special days when the unexpected, no matter how expected is truly the frosting on the cake.

Case in point, today’s ride with Anke, Wis and the Duchess…a relaxed 36 mile spin to give some sore weary bones a break (all three are nursing injuries). I took all the pulling responsibilities (ok it’s not really a pull when you are riding at touring speed), keeping the group at an easy 18-19 MPH. We decided to toss in an airport loop for a change of scenery, which rewarded us with our first unexpected treat…

Wisnick, the Dr. Doolittle of cycling

…a pair of deer nonchalantly crossing the road in front of us. Although they were well aware of our presence, they casually strolled across the road in no hurry whatsoever. As if that wasn’t enough, we were given a full force encore when we turned onto the main airport thoroughfare, seeing a large herd of deer grazing by the roadside. I counted at least 10 deer in all! Sure, deer are not that all uncommon in Florida, but not in these numbers, especially at a busy airport! It’s great to see nature coexisting with us, no matter how unfair we are to it.

Our third and final unexpected treat came after we had finished our mid ride coffee break at Starbucks, when a film crew called us over to do some cameo walk throughs for the commercials they were shooting. We strutted our lycra clad bodies (ok perhaps not the most graceful runway walk as walking in cleats is more of a waddle than a walk) past the camera not once but twice. We were told to be quick and excited to be walking our bikes past the storefront, all the while being oblivious to the cameras presence…I think we were naturals…can’t wait to se the spot on TV.

Our 15 minutes of fame

All in all another fun ride with great friends and some unexpected treats! I can’t wait to see what the rest of the summer will bring.
