FaceBook was buzzing Friday morning as a large group of riders sat at home messaging each other, impatiently watching a big blob of weather close in right before the start of our planned ride. Our group, which was composed of cyclists and runners from the Speedsters running club, feverishly texted first hand reports of the passing storm, wondering if the ride was a go or not. We were all tracking the oncoming storm more accurately than the Weather Channel does when a hurricane approaches.
As luck would have it, the storm hit just a few moments before ride time, scrubbing what would have been a fun group ride….sorry Velominati, riding in the rain is one thing, but riding in a thunderstorm is definitely a no-go…but, as is normally the case with the summer storms here in Florida, it passed quickly, and even though it dumped a great deal of water, our relentless heat and sunshine would evaporate all traces of it in short order.
Sure enough, FaceBook massages starting to appear on my phone attempting to get the ride started up again. Being a workday, most riders lost their window of opportunity to ride, and were off to their daily non-two-wheeled routines. Wis, the Duchess and myself though were fortunate enough to have the time, so we met up at the Sweetbay for a thoroughly enjoyable post rain afternoon ride.
Curiously, we almost had to scrub the ride again as the Duchess showed up without her cleats, gloves and helmet, but Wis came to her rescue with a spare helmet and pair of gloves. As for the shoes, we found out that Newton lugs fit quite well in a set of Shimano SPD-SL pedals…well enough indeed to hold a 20+ MPH average speed on the way home! There has to be some extra Velominati brownie points after that performance!
